From Mattel’s Electronic Auto Race in 1976 to the Sony Remote Portable Play in 2025

Portable Games are a large part of gaming today with devices like the Nintendo Switch and Sony Remote Portal Play taking over the market today. The concept of portable gaming actually began as simple handheld toys until we developed extravagant devices. In this week’s blog, we look into the journey of handheld gaming.
The advent of Portable Games
The first ever documented handheld electronic game was the Mattel Electronics Auto Race (1976). It offered basic gameplay using LED screens. The device had limited graphics and functions but was very popular in its time.

In 1980, Nintendo released its first portable game called Game and Watch. It featured an LCD screen and came with multiple games, offering more advanced gameplay than any console before. This was a great development in portable gaming.
The Rise of Portable Gaming
As technology progressed in the 1990s, 2000s portable consoles became more advanced. Nintendo continued its dominance by releasing the classic Game Boy in 1989. The Game Boy revolutionized gaming by introducing cartridges with different games. Games like Tetris and Pokemon allowed Game Boy to be engrained in the culture of gaming.

Following the success of the Game Boy, Sony entered the portable gaming market in 2004 with the PlayStation Portable (PSP). My personal favorite and a literal game changer. It offered splendid 3D graphics, a large screen, and the ability to play movies and music, giving consumers more options than any other. In the same time, Nintendo released the Nintendo DS which introduced dual touchscreens compared to others.

Mobile Gaming
With the emergence of smartphones, portable gaming took an unexpected turn. Apple’s iPhone popularized mobile gaming with games on the app store. Mobile games like Angry Birds, Candy Crush, and Clash of Clans peaked the interest of millions. Smartphone games had impressive graphics and more complex mechanics than traditional games.

Mobile gaming became a platform for more immersive experiences. Titles like PUBG Mobile, Fortnite, and Genshin Impact brought console-quality graphics and online multiplayer to mobile devices, changing the way people interacted with portable gaming.
The Present and Future of Gaming

With the rise of cloud gaming the idea of playing high-end console games on a portable device is now a reality. Cloud gaming enables users to stream games directly to their smartphones, tablets, or even portable consoles without the need for powerful hardware. Consoles such as the XBOX, Playstation and even the Oculus Quest give gamers a different perspective on gaming. Virtual Reality games allow gamers to experience immersive virtual worlds without being tethered to a computer or console.
